February is National Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. This age related disease is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans over age 60. It causes damage to the macula, the area of the retinal where clear central vision takes place.

More and more is being learned about the causes, prevention and treatment of this disease. Some factors that have been identified as important are good nutrition, protection from ultraviolet radiation and not smoking.
